Stephen "Smitty" C. Smith, 83, of Higganum, husband of Barbara (Ripley) Smith, died Wednesday, October 4, 2023 at his home.

He was born in Middletown, the son of the late Percy and Eva (Peck) Smith. A veteran of the Vietnam Era, he proudly served with the US Marine Corp.  Prior to his retirement, Steve was a storeroom manager with Northeast Utilities in Middletown.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by: his daughters Jenell Smith Janes and her husband Rob and Andrea Menard and her husband Todd; brother Randy and his wife Maryann; sister Arlene; grandsons Talon and Trenton Menard; Bob and Bill Janes; great granddaughter Sadie Janes; and several nieces and nephews.

Steve was a man who lived life to the fullest. As a founding member of the Haddam Horseshoe League, he enjoyed the competition and comradery that pitching shoes and throwing darts brought.  Earlier this year, he was inducted into Middletown's Little League Hall of Fame.  An avid woodworker, Steve love to fish, spend time in his "back 40" and was always ready to share a beer with a friend. He was a true friend to many and will be missed by all.

Graveside services, with military honors, will be held Tuesday, October 10th at 1 PM at the State Veterans' Cemetery, Bow Lane, Middletown. Visitation will be held Monday, October 9th from 5 to 7 PM at Biega Funeral Home, 3 Silver Street, Middletown. Those who wish may send memorial contributions to the charity of their choice.
