Rosemary (Ridley) Fontanella, 77, of Middlefield, wife of Ross E. Fontanella, died Wednesday July 1, 2026 surrounded by her loving family at Middlesex Hospital.

She was born in Meriden, the daughter of the late Howard R. and Josephine (Lunney) Ridley. Rose graduated from Maloney High School in Meriden alongside her devoted husband Ross. Prior to her retirement, Rose was a registered nurse for over 20 years at Meriden Wallingford Hospital, and later, Midstate Medical Center.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by her children, Steven Fontanella of Higganum, Christine Rice and her husband Thomas of Wallingford; brothers, Howard Ridley (Nancy) of Florida, Timothy Ridley of Meriden, Michael Ridley (Vicky) of Florida; grandchildren Madison and Ashley Fontanella and Jacob, Kacey, and Levi Rice. She was predeceased by a granddaughter, Gianna Rice. Rose was also the loving Aunt to several amazing nieces and nephews, Kim Iannacci, Darcy Agro, Kevin Ridley, Shelley Ridley, Danielle Ambrose, and Jenna Zabor.

Rose was a devoted and compassionate woman, which led her to pursue her career in nursing. Rose began her career as an LPN, then continued her studies to become a Registered Nurse. One of Rose’s greatest accomplishments in life was obtaining her Bachelor of Science in Nursing while simultaneously working and raising her young family. Rose worked diligently on the Critical Care Unit at Midstate as well as the Step Down Unit, and finished her career in the Surgical Center. Rose’s passion for nursing defined her and was evident in the number of lives she touched throughout her career and the high level of love, compassion, and care that she gave to each patient she encountered.

Rose found joy in life's simple pleasures and had a gift for making ordinary moments feel special. She loved reading and crocheting. Some of Rose's happiest days were spent on their boat with her beloved husband and family at the Pattaconk Yacht Club in Chester. She treasured time together, whether it was taking walks, relaxing with her favorite evening television shows, or preparing meals for those she loved.

A gifted artist, Rose expressed her creativity through beautifully painted crafts and artwork. She found great happiness in sharing her talents, often gifting her paintings to family and friends, who will treasure them for years to come.

Above all else, Rose cherished her role as a grandmother. Rose's greatest joy was simply being with her grandchildren. The love she shared with them will remain one of her most enduring legacies.

Her Funeral Liturgy will be held on Wednesday (July 8th) at 11 a.m. at the Church of the Resurrection, 115 Pond Hill Rd., Wallingford. Burial will be in St. John Cemetery, Wallingford. Visitation will be held on Tuesday (July 7th) from 4 to 6 p.m. at Biega Funeral Home, 3 Silver St., Middletown.
