Middletown

Obituary

Robert "Bob" Fralick passed away peacefully on December 9 th at the age of 96.  Bob was born on August 6 th 1925.  He was raised in Jersey City and Hell's Kitchen in New York City.  While he was still in high school Bob was signed to the New York Giants farm team where he showed great promise.

World War 2 interrupted his plans to play professional baseball.  He enlisted in the United States Marine Corps and after basic training was deployed to the South Pacific.  Bob was in the first wave of the assault on Peleliu where he was wounded by mortar fire.  He spent nearly a year in hospitals and three operations before he would walk again and he carried shrapnel in his foot for the rest of his life.  His injuries ended any possibility of him pursuing a career as a professional baseball player.

He attended Bergen County Junior College where he met the love of his life, Charlotte Drehle who he later married.  They would have many good times and adventures over their long marriage.  They lived for years in New Jersey where he worked developing planned communities in Fairlawn and Radburn.

In 1970 Bob moved his family to Middletown to develop Wesleyan Hills where he formed friendships that would last the rest of his life.  At the center was the Wesleyan Hills Swim and Tennis Club which became so many things for so many people.  Bob continued with his love of sports coaching swimming at both the YMCA and the Club.  He became a baseball scout for the New York Mets, the Philadelphia Phillies and the Boston Red Sox.  He also volunteered his time in the Middletown school system helping to coach football, basketball, swimming and of course baseball.

In 1987 Bob relocated to Boynton Beach, Florida.  He would coach several baseball teams including the Palm Beach Tropics and the Miami Miracle.  He also worked at the Bucky Dent Baseball School for 12 years as the head instructor.

In 1999 Bob moved back to Middletown to be closer to family.  He started the Bob Fralick Baseball School and continued to instruct kids well into his eighties.  He was active with the Middletown Legion baseball.  He was inducted into the Middletown Sports Hall of Fame and named  one of Middletown's Most Notable Citizens.

Besides sports Bob had many talents and interests.  He loved to read, wrote short stories, had a love of animals, music, especially big band, and had an artistic side.  His first love was people, the kids he coached and instructed, and especially his close friends.  He leaves a legacy of everything he passed down to countless people, he was in fact a library of knowledge.  His charm, humor and generosity were well known to those who knew him.

Bob's greatest love was his family.  He is survived by his daughter, Lindsay Fralick, son-in-law, Jim Kowalski, son, Robert Fralick, daughter-in-law, Virginia Wade-Fralick, and granddaughters Ava and Chloe Wade-Fralick.

Due to concerns about Covid there will be no calling hours or service at this time.  If you would like to honor his life in lieu of flowers make donations in his name to the Middletown Park and Recreation Department.  Bob would have liked that.  He was, after everything, a Middletown guy.

His was a remarkable life and he will be deeply missed but his was a life well lived and everyone loved Bob.
