Michael Mandeville, 60, left this world peacefully and quietly on Saturday May 18th with his wife Nella, his best friend, and the love of his life by his side following a 5-year battle with Ocular Melanoma. He was the son of the late Eugene and Gail (Burgess) Mandeville and father to the late Derek Mandeville. Michael leaves to mourn his passing his wife, best friend, and soul mate of 39 years Nella (Sbona), and his son, Nicholas.

He leaves his brother, Eugene (Kerry) Mandeville of Branford, sister, Mary (Daniel) Sims of Colchester, mother-in-law, Mary Sbona of Vernon, brother-in-law, Manny (fiancée Maria) Sbona of East Haddam, sisters-in-law, Cindy (John) Stelma of Vernon, Lisa (Al) Binok of Manchester. Grandchildren, Gabe Mandeville, Mason Mandeville, Connor Davis, many nieces, nephews, cousins, aunts, uncles, friends. He was predeceased by his father-in-law, Joe Sbona, nephew, Paul Mandeville, and sister-in-law, Robin Mandeville.

Born and raised in Middletown, Michael attended Middletown schools and South Kent where he played hockey. He worked at Jarvis Products as part of their leadership team for 38 years. He was well respected by all who knew him. The outpouring of love he experienced as he fought cancer was something that touched his heart tremendously. He truly felt the love expressed in so many ways.

Everyone loved Michael. He had a smile that never faded no matter what the circumstances and a sense of humor that never left him, even on those tough days. He never complained and did not let anyone see the pain he was in. He didn't dwell on the future, he just lived and loved each day surrounded by those who loved him, at home, at work, and at play.

Ocular Melanoma is a rare cancer that strikes approximately 5 to 6 people in 1,000,000,in the general population. Treatment is evolving but so far there is no cure or effective treatment. Michael continued to participate in clinical trials knowing that a cure for him wasn't possible, however he did it in the hopes of helping others with the same rare type of cancer he had.  That was true Michael, in a word, Selfless.

Calling hours will be held on Thursday May 23, 2024, at Biega Funeral Home, 3 Silver Street, Middletown, from 5 to 8 p.m. Funeral services will be held Friday May 24, 2024, at 10 a.m. at the United Churches of Durham, 228 Main Street, Durham. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, Middletown.
