Matthew Thomas Gayeski, 82, beloved resident of Portland, CT, passed away on Monday, December 16, 2024, at Portland Rehabilitation and Care Center. The son of the late Johanna and John Gayeski, Matt grew up in Portland, where he developed a lifelong passion for sports and left an indelible mark on the community.

During his high school years, Matt excelled in basketball and baseball. His strong pitching arm caught the attention of the San Francisco Giants, who scouted him in 1960 directly out of high school. He went on to play in the minor leagues for teams such as the Quincy Giants, Eugene Emeralds—where he was named Pitcher of the Month—Springfield Giants, where he achieved an ERA of 3.07, and the El Paso Sun Kings. Matt also played professionally in Canada. Although his promising baseball career was cut short by injury, Matt cherished those years and proudly shared stories of his achievements. To this day, residents of Portland regard him as the top player to come out of the town.

After his baseball career, Matt worked for EIS Brake Parts Division of Standard Motor Products until his retirement in August 2002. Known for his rugged charm, huge presence, and generous heart, Matt continued to pursue his love of sports, dominating in everything from volleyball to softball. He earned a reputation as the best slow-pitch softball player in the region, with opponents fearing his skill on the mound. He was also an accomplished duckpin bowler and golfer, maintaining a handicap under 10 despite playing golf purely for fun. His dog, Shep, was a constant companion, often cleverly hidden in his golf bag during outings.

Matt's life was enriched by his close-knit group of friends, including Wayne, Goodie, Cubby and Dick with whom he shared over 50 years of camaraderie. Together, they frequented local restaurants, hung out at Cafe 66, went on fishing trips and participated in numerous tournaments and leagues. These friendships meant the world to Matt, especially in his later years.

Matt is survived by his sister-in-law, Sonja Gayeski; his nieces and nephews: James Gayeski and fiancée Dia Poindexter, Ellen Gayeski and fiancée Shannon Boon, Beth Ann Brodeur, Gabrielle Brodeur, and Tyler Brodeur. He was predeceased by his brother, Richard Gayeski, and his sister, Sharon Vasquez.

Family and friends are invited to pay their respects at Biega Funeral Home, 3 Silver Street, Middletown, CT, on Friday, December 27, 2024, from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM. A funeral service will follow at 7:00 PM at the funeral home. Burial will take place at Saint Mary Cemetery in Portland, CT, on Saturday, December 28, 2024, at 10:00 AM.
