It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Mary Jane (Worrell) Flood, 89, of East Hampton, wife of the late Peter C. Flood. She passed away peacefully on Tuesday, July 7, 2026 surrounded by her loving family. She was born in New Haven to the late William Newland and Dorothy Brockett.

She is survived by her loving children, John Reynolds Jr., Diane Crescimano (Anthony) of Middletown, Brian Reynolds (Hope), Beth Dufour (Richard) of East Hampton, Steven Flood of East Haven, Maryjane Fay of East Hampton. Lovingly known as “Nana,” Mary Jane has fifteen grandchildren and twenty-six great grandchildren. She is survived by her siblings Jean Armstrong (Bob) of Killingworth, Dorothy Johns of Milford, William Worrell (Pat), Richard Newland (Joann) of Southington, Katherine Chapman, Belinda Wilson, Michelle Gemma of Maine, William Newland JR of Arizona, and sister-in-law Louise Flood of Durham. She was predeceased by her beloved granddaughter, Jessica Safford; her beloved sister Beverly Sands; and brother David Newland. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews who loved their “Aunt Mary.” In addition, Mary Jane had a very special relationship with Katie McLean, a wonderful companion and caregiver who has become an honorary family member.

In her younger years Mary was an adventurer who loved racing cars with her Dad and brothers, dancing, and practical jokes that were legendary. She was a devoted daughter to her parents and “Mothered” her siblings throughout her life.

In 1976 Mary Jane completed one of her life’s greatest accomplishments— building her log cabin in East Hampton, CT. Her home was her pride and joy where everyone was welcomed as family. She knew the value of a day’s hard work, which started with a cup of coffee and ended with a cocktail. You could find her in the garden, on her John Deere tractor, painting, or in her sewing room. Mary was kind, generous, and thoughtful creating countless baby blankets, Raggedy Anne dolls, placemats, and many many aprons. She was known for her secret recipe coffee brandy, Swedish meatballs, and deviled eggs.

Mary Jane loved nothing more than to help her family members with home projects— she came ready to work and was the most excited when it was painting. She never forgot a birthday with her homemade cakes. Mary was very punctual and known for her famous calls to make sure we didn’t forget to change our clocks for daylight savings.

Mary Jane was adored by her family. She was a remarkable mother and grandmother. We are incredibly lucky to have known and loved her.

Funeral services will be held Monday, July 13th at 7 pm at Biega’s Funeral Home, 3 Silver Street, Middletown. Friends and family may gather prior to the service from 5-7 pm.
