Mark “Wig” Carlson, 72, of Higganum, husband of the late Patricia (Crowley) Carlson, passed away on Saturday, May 30, 2026.
Born in Middletown, Mark was the son of Reginald and Dorothea (Goodell) Carlson. More than anything, Mark was a family man. He showed his love in everything he did.
Mark was a lifelong carpenter by trade; he had a rare and natural talent for figuring things out. He could fix, build, or solve just about anything. He never hesitated to help, teach, or step in when needed. To his family, he wasn’t just dependable, he was their foundation.
That extended beyond home to Bill’s Seafood in Westbrook, where he worked for many years right up until his final days. It wasn’t just a job to Mark—it was another family. He left a lasting mark on everyone that worked alongside him.
He cherished his annual beach vacations, creating traditions and memories his family will carry forever. He loved trips to the Caribbean and to Las Vegas, especially when shared with those closest to him. No holiday was more special to him than Christmas, for many years he proudly became Santa Claus for his family, bringing joy to generations.
He will be remembered for his gruff sense of humor that brought so many smiles.
Mark is survived by his children, Michael Barrett and his wife Kelly of Glastonbury, Erik Carlson of Islip, NY, Rebecca Barrett Geissler and her husband Peter of Higganum. He is also survived by his siblings: Pete Carlson and his wife Janice of Haddam, Kris Carlson of Florida, Edith Goldsmith and her husband Brian of Higganum, Prudence Beyer and her husband Clement of East Hampton.
He was a proud grandfather to Cody and his wife Kristen, Casey and his fiancé Alison, Camden, and Caroline Barrett; Jamie and Emma Carlson; Ella and Ava Geissler; and great-grandfather to Charlotte, Aria, Lucy, and Emerson.
He was predeceased by his brothers Charles and David, and his sisters Katrin and Anne.
Calling hours will be held on Thursday, June 4th, from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. at Biega Funeral Home, 3 Silver Street, Middletown. Burial will be at the convenience of the family. To share memories or express condolences online please visit www.biegafuneralhome.com.
