Marjorie "Mert" (Hanna) Schufer, 88, formerly of Portland, beloved wife of 65 years to the late John H. Schufer, passed away on Sunday December 10, 2023 at Middlesex Hospital. She was born in Middletown, daughter of the late William Hanna Jr. and Marjorie (Hallberg) Hanna. Prior to her retirement, she worked as an office manager and bookkeeper for the family business, John & Bobs Service Station. She was a member of the 2nd Congregational Church of Middle Haddam. Mert enjoyed the beach, their home in Florida, hosting Christmas parties, and was well known and loved for her awesome wedding cakes.

Mert is survived by her brothers, Robert Hanna, William Hanna and his wife Kim; sisters, Irene Nichols, Carol Baretta; as well as several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her brother, Donald Hanna and niece, Jodi Baretta Bjorklund.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday December 16th at 10:30 a.m. at Biega Funeral Home, 3 Silver St. Middletown. Burial will be held at the Union Hill Cemetery, Middle Haddam. Visitation will be held prior to the service on Saturday from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. at Biega Funeral Home.
