Obituary

Laurel, a vibrant and cherished soul, was born on March 17, 1947, in Norwich and was raised in Middletown, Connecticut, to the late Peter and Jeanne Schaeffer. She was predeceased by her sister Judith Jursch. With a spirit as bright as her birth date suggests, Laurel filled the lives of those around her with joy and warmth until her peaceful passing on October 28, 2026.

A devoted wife to her loving husband, William of 41 years, their life together was marked by the strength and love they shared. Her legacy of love continues with her daughters Robin (Schaeffer) Del Vecchio and husband Dean of Middletown, Wendy Rochette and partner Christopher Epps of Berlin, Laurie Rochette and fiancé Ivan Watson of Middletown, William’s children Walter Ruimerman and wife Janice of Higganum, Rebecca (Ruimerman) Earl and husband Neal of Middletown, and Scot Ruimerman and wife Sopak of Middletown. Laurel’s nurturing heart was a guiding light for her grandchildren—Austin Brassaw, Tevon Silva, DonTerrius Silva, Garrett Rice-Earl, Emilio Annino, Kayden Fujio, Niya Earl, Desaraena Carr, Samantha Ruimerman, Sienna Ruimerman, Shane Ruimerman, Samuel Ruimerman—and her great-grandchildren, Camden Brassaw, Ace'Syn Brackett, Maylin Rabassa, and Mason Rabassa along with her beloved dog Henry.

Tiny but mighty, Laurel was known for her independence and hardworking nature. For over three decades, she dedicated her professional life to Automatic TLC, where she worked diligently as a Service Dispatcher, retiring in 2013. Her commitment and work ethic were admired by colleagues and clients alike. Beyond her professional career her love for animals led her to volunteer at the Meriden Humane Society, where she spent countless hours caring for cats and dogs, ensuring they found homes filled with love.

Laurel was a woman of many passions. She found joy in attending NASCAR races, watching her favorites Dale Earnhardt Jr. and Kyle Larson. She was a big fan of the UCONN Women’s basketball team. She enjoyed the simple pleasures of playing Bingo and the penny slots at casinos. Her love for country music and attending concerts was a soundtrack to her life. She enjoyed camping with her husband and spending their winters as "snowbirds" in Florida which brought her immense happiness. Laurel was also an enthusiastic host, bringing her family together for Thanksgiving and Christmas each year, creating memories that will be cherished forever. Laurel loved and adored her grandchildren and found happiness in attending their many special events throughout the years and captivating those moments on camera. Her spirit of generosity and love will continue to inspire those who were fortunate enough to know her.

Laurel's life was a tapestry of love, family, and dedication. As we say our goodbyes, we hold dear the memories of her laughter, warmth, and the immeasurable love she shared with us all. Her spirit will forever remain in the hearts of those she touched.

The family would also like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to the staff at Jerome Home in New Britain for the compassionate care and kindness they showed Laurel in her final days.

Visitation, to celebrate her life, will be held at Biega’s Funeral Home, 3 Silver St., Middletown on Friday November 6th from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. followed by burial at the State Veterans’ Cemetery, Middletown. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that donations be made to the Meriden Humane Society, reflecting her lifelong commitment to animal welfare.
