Judith
Mclellan-Sperow
Aug 22, 1952 — Nov 4, 2024
Southington
It is with deep sadness to announce that Judy passed away on Monday, November 4, 2024, with her husband and son by her side after a lengthy battle with Neuroendocrine Cancer.
The word "fighter" sums up who Judy was in every way. After beating Breast Cancer earlier in her life, Judy was diagnosed with Stage 4 Neuroendocrine Cancer in 2014. Although this was not easy news for her to digest, she continued to live her life with love, optimism, and purpose. This outlook continued until she was given a grim timeline in April of 2023 and placed on Hospice. Judy and her family accepted that they would be saying goodbye and were grateful for the time that they had together since her diagnosis 9 years earlier. Despite the odds stacked against her, she continued to fight, and against those mighty odds, she was able to regain her health and exit hospice while resuming her normal hobbies such as nightly walks. Judy recently received another unfortunate prognosis and decided to stay in her home with her husband where she was most comfortable. Anyone that knows her was not surprised that she continued to fight all the way to the end so that she could spend as much time with close friends and family as possible.
Judy leaves behind her adoring husband Timothy "Tim" Sperow who did everything possible to maintain her comfort and happiness throughout this challenging time, and his two children Charlie and Jeanette Sperow. She was truly beloved by her two sons Thomas "Tom" and Stephen "Steve" McLellan, her soon to be daughter-in-law Olivia Durham, her brother George Baller, his wife Candace "Candy", Judy's best friend since high school Jean "Jeanie" Kenefick, and generally anyone that had the opportunity to spend time with her from old friends, family, and coworkers to recent neighbors.
Judy grew up in Middletown Connecticut enjoying sports such as softball and volleyball. She met her best friend Jeanie in high school, and they were a massive part of each other's lives all the way to the end sharing experiences such as cross-country road trips that they continued to reminisce over with great happiness. She had her firstborn son Stephen with her first husband Jeffery McLellan and welcomed her 2nd son Thomas two years later. Her two boys were everything to her and they were aware of how lucky that they were to have such a great mother. She was invested in their interests and continued to make sure they got to and from sporting practices despite dealing with the effects of chemotherapy and radiation from her first bout with breast cancer. She loved to watch Steve compete in track and basketball, and Tom in track football. She made sure her two boys didn't miss out on anything that they wanted to do in life and was willing to sacrifice whatever it took for that to happen.
Judy met her current husband Tim Sperow shortly after going into remission from Breast Cancer, and they had a blissful marriage of 21 years. Judy played in a softball league at the time and was introduced to Tim at one of her games. The two began dating and were married shortly after. Tim and Judy loved to go to Saratoga and frequently made weekend trips there and to other nearby destinations. Ostensibly, the two were very different people, but their love for each other was so strong that their differences complimented each other in a positive way. They constantly joked with each other and were an example of a relationship to strive to have.
Judy loved the Red Sox, UConn Basketball, and the Patriots. She would regularly text her son Tom during Patriots games and Steve during Red Sox games. Judy and Tim moved to Southington, CT in 2016, and Judy quickly made friends with the entire neighborhood through stopping and chatting during walks. Many of them came to see her during her last days due to the impact that simple gestures like that made on them. The extra 18 unexpected months of Judy's life were cherished by both her and her family. Judy and Tom resumed weekly walks until she no longer could, and Steve was able to tell his mother his plans to propose to his girlfriend Olivia and then be the first person that he called to her delight after it happened. Judy was also able to meet and spend time with Olivia's family during this period, which made Judy feel at ease knowing that her son would marry into a great family. Due to the length of Judy's illness, her sons will forever be grateful to have this extra time with her. Judy will be forever missed and never forgotten. Everyone that got to know her was acutely aware of how lucky that they were to have her in their lives.
A celebration of Judy's life will be held on Sunday, November 10th at 6 PM at Biega Funeral Home 3 Silver Street, Middletown, CT. Friends may call at the funeral home prior to the service from 4 to 6 PM. We invite anyone that knew her to attend and remember the wonderful person that we lost.
Judy, Tim, Steve, and Tom participated in the Race In The Park in New Britain, CT every year after Judy's initial Breast Cancer diagnosis where she proudly wore her pink Survivor shirt and cap. In Lieu of flowers, Judy would like donations made to The Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation that supports this event and Breast Cancer Research. https://www.komen.org/
