Judith Ann (Nichols) Freer, 73, of West Hartford, wife of the late Ronald James Freer, died Monday October 19, 2026 at home.
She was born in Middletown, the daughter of the late Robert and Frances (Bartlett) Nichols. Judy attended Mercy High School in Middletown and earned an associate’s degree from Middlesex Community College. Judith worked for Pratt & Whitney and Stop and Shop in Cromwell.
Judy was a devoted wife, mother, sister, daughter, aunt, friend and coworker. She will always be remembered for her beautiful blue eyes, warm smile, infectious laugh, and for the love she gave to everyone in her life. Judy enjoyed vacationing with her family, celebrating holidays especially Thanksgiving, and rooting for her beloved Boston Red Sox.
Judy and her husband Ron were high school sweethearts, dating from the time she was 15-years-old. They spent their early years together at the drag strip, and cruising the Berlin Turnpike before marrying and eventually building their log home in Haddam where they raised their two daughters. As empty-nesters, they went on many adventures in their RV.
After a life-altering accident in 2015, Judy defied the odds. She smiled through pain and endeared herself to everyone who helped her through recovery and finding a new normal. Her family especially thanks those who provided 24-hour care so that she was able to live comfortably in her own home.
Judith is survived by her daughters, Carolyn Freer and son-in-law Kevin Amenta of West Hartford and Heather Freer of Hoboken, NJ; brothers, Thomas Nichols and his wife Robin of Rockport, MA, and Robert Nichols of Middletown; sister, Ellen Palmer of Newbury, NH; also several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by a brother, Daniel Nichols of Hamden.
Visitation will be held on Saturday Nov. 7th from 1 to 2:30 p.m. followed by a Words of Remembrance Service at 2:30 p.m. at Biega Funeral Home, 3 Silver St., Middletown. In lieu of flowers, the family would like to request that donations be made in honor of Judith to The Christopher & Dana Reeve Foundation at https://www.christopherreeve.org/ .
