Obituary

John Fredrick Whidden, 71, of Portland, died Friday, September 22, 2023, at MidState Medical Center, Meriden.

He was born in New Glasgow, Nova Scotia, the son of the late Arthur G. and Frances Mae (Rogers) Whidden.  John had been employed with Henkels & McCoy and spent many years working at Gotta's Farm where he maintained all the equipment for the farm.  He was known as the master mechanic" and could fix anything.  He was the go-to guy for many people who would stop by the garage to have their cars worked on. He took pride in his work and was meticulous when it came to attention to detail.

Johnny, as his friends referred to him, had a passion for cars.  He enjoyed and spent his free time going to NASCAR races, drag races, car shows, and swap meets.  He was a member of the Gasket Goons car club.  You could always find him at his favorite spots in town or just hanging out with his close friends.

He is survived by his daughter, Tracey Garofalo, and her husband Louis of Middlefield; brother, Steven Whidden of Portland; sisters, Deborah Sadlowski of Portland, Cheryl Russin, and Sheila Freeman; two grandsons, Luke and Michael Garofalo; also, his nephews.  He was predeceased by his brother, David Whidden.  He also leaves behind many close friends.
