Obituary

Joan Ryan, 91, of Heritage Commons, Middletown, passed away peacefully from this life to the next at her home on September 24, 2022 after a 10-year battle with Dementia. She was the beloved wife for 62 years to the late Robert Ryan.

Joan was born in Canaan, CT to Augusta Bagnaschi and Frederick Reel. Joan and her siblings were raised by their aunt, Dorothy Wilson, after Augusta died. Joan was a wonderful wife, mother, sister, aunt, Noni, great-grandma, and friend to many. Joan, who was called Noni by her family, will be remembered for her delicious pasta dinners and family gatherings.

Joan moved to Middletown in 1954 after her marriage to the love of her life, Bob. She was a devoted wife and caring mother. Joan was an active parishioner at St. John Church, Middletown, for many years and a member of the American Legion Auxiliary, spending many summers working at Palmer Field. Her cherished moments were the times spent with her family and friends. She especially enjoyed going to her grandson's school events and was an avid UCONN Women's Basketball fan. Joan and Bob will always be remembered as Mercy High School sport enthusiasts. They attended numerous softball and basketball games for many years, cheering on the Mercy Tigers and showing support for all the athletes.

Her greatest joy was being a grandmother and entertaining family and friends at her home, either during the holidays or at a backyard pool party. Joan was a wonderful cook and a gracious host.

Joan was predeceased by her loving husband Robert Ryan and her beloved sister, Shirley McCarthy. She is survived by her daughter, Patricia Boothroyd (Ed) of Higganum, grandson Ryan Boothroyd of Rocky Hill, grandson Jason Boothroyd (Kristi) and 3 great-grandchildren Connor, Riley, and Hunter of Higganum. She is also survived by her brother, Fred Reel, her special cousin Sally Curtis, nieces, nephews, and several close friends.

The family wishes to thank Sharon's Homecare Services, including Nicky, Tiny and especially Ann Marie, who was Joan's primary caregiver. Thanks also to Middlesex Hospice at home for the compassionate care Joan received during her final months.

A Mass of Christian burial will be held on Monday October 3, 2022 at St. Francis Church in Middletown at 11:00 AM. Burial will be at the State Veterans' Cemetery, Middletown.
