George H. Purdell, 79, of East Haddam, CT, husband of Debra (Lohneiss) Purdell, passed away peacefully on Saturday September 26, 2026 at his home.

He was born in Middletown, CT on April 11, 1947, the son of the late Charles F. and Anne (Schmaltz) Purdell. George was a graduate of Woodrow Wilson High School class of 1965. A veteran of the Vietnam War, he served with US Army as a mechanic attaining the rank of SP4. George then went on to work at the State of Connecticut DOT for over 40 years in the Department of Purchasing, retiring as Assistant Director of Purchasing.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by his children, Michael Purdell (Jenna) and Jennifer Purdell; brothers, Chuck Purdell (Sue) and Bob Purdell (Barbara); grandchildren, Kaleigh, Mackenzie, and Andrew; also, several nieces and nephews.

George was a loving husband, devoted father and proud “Poppy” who would do anything for his family, friends and neighbors. He had a gift for fixing just about anything and enjoyed spending time cruising around in his AMX. He looked forward to spending his time camping with his family, snowmobiling with his son, bringing his daughter to numerous horse shows and tinkering with his Farmall Cub. George loved to take scooter rides with his wife and when not on two wheels they enjoyed car rides along the CT shoreline. George also spent many years tractor pulling at local fairs with his lifelong friend Tony. Once retired, he found more time to relax and enjoy breakfast or lunch out, sometimes spending hours a week with his friends at Herman’s Diner. He had a special place in his heart for animals, especially dogs and lovingly rescued many throughout the years with his wife.

Graveside services, with military honors, will be held on Tuesday (Oct. 6th) at 2 p.m. at the CT State Veterans’ Cemetery, 317 Bow Lane, Middletown. There are no calling hours.
