David P. Dunn, 61, of Middletown, passed away Tuesday, June 30, 2026, at Hartford Hospital, surrounded by his family.

He was born in Middletown, the son of the late Francis "Frank" and Frances (Otfinoski) Dunn, Sr. Dave was a 1982 graduate of Xavier High School, where he was a gifted three-sport varsity athlete in football, basketball, and baseball. His exceptional athletic ability, competitive spirit, and love of the game were evident from an early age and became a defining part of his life. Following graduation, he attended West Point Preparatory School in Monmouth, New Jersey, and later West Point Academy, New York, where he played wide receiver at both schools, before transferring to the University of Connecticut. At UConn, Dave became a standout wide receiver for the Huskies, earning recognition as one of the program's top playmakers. During his collegiate career, he set numerous records and still holds the University of Connecticut record for the most punt returns in a single season with 41, a true testament to his talent, determination, impact on the program and game.

His love of athletics continued long after his college playing days. Dave spent many years playing on numerous men's softball teams, where his athleticism, competitive spirit, and love of the game continued to shine. Whether making a great play on the field or sharing laughs with teammates after the game, the friendships he built and the memories he made through softball remained some of the most cherished times of his life.

Sports were far more than a pastime to Dave, they were a lifelong passion that shaped his greatest memories and relationships. A devoted fan of the UConn Huskies, the New York Giants, the Los Angeles Dodgers, and the game of Golf, he followed each team and sport with unwavering loyalty and enthusiasm. Above all, his greatest joy was sharing that passion with his daughter, Lauren. From the time she was young, he passed on not only his knowledge of the games he loved, but also the passion, excitement, traditions, and unwavering loyalty that came with being a fan. Whether it was attending games together, cheering on the Huskies and Giants, or simply talking sports, those moments became the foundation of a bond unlike any other. They were more than shared hobbies—they were treasured memories and passion that Lauren will carry with her for the rest of her life. 

Though his records and athletic accomplishments will always be remembered, it is the love he shared with his family, the friendships he built, and the passion for sports that he also passed on to his daughter that will forever define his legacy.

He is survived by his beloved daughter, Lauren Dunn of Middletown; his brothers, Francis Dunn, Jr. and his wife, Kathleen, of Middlefield, and Edward Dunn and his wife, Katherine, of Middletown; his sisters, Susan Negrich and her husband, John, of Haddam, Mary Perrotti, Patricia Santangelo, and Jane Witherell and her husband, Timothy, all of Middletown; as well as many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his sister, Barbara Dunn, and his brother, James P. Dunn.

Visitation will be held on Tuesday (July 21st) from 4:00 to 6:30 p.m. at Biega Funeral Home, 3 Silver Street, Middletown, followed by a funeral service at 6:30 p.m. Burial will be at the convenience of his family at Calvary Cemetery.
