Daniel Edward Smith, 42, of Portland, passed away Wednesday January 7, 2026, at Yale New Haven Health surrounded by his loving family.

He was born in Worcester, MA, the son of Robert N. and Karen E. (Kilik) Smith of Grafton, MA. Dan was raised in Grafton, MA and was a graduate of Grafton High School in 2002. Dan furthered his education at Westfield State University, earning a bachelor's degree in criminal justice in 2006. Throughout Highschool and College, he took great pride in his time on the football field, where his love for the game blossomed.

His greatest joy in life was spending time with his beloved son, Cole. Dan was an avid New England Sports fan and regularly enjoyed attending games with his son. Along with the New England Patriots, he was a devoted New Orlean's Saints fan.

Dan "Smitty" was currently a Detective Sergeant with the City of Middletown with 19 years of service. During his career, he was widely respected for his humble demeanor, kind disposition, and unwavering dedication to service. As a member of the Special Investigations Unit, he worked tirelessly to protect victims of domestic violence, child abuse, and sexual assault. Dan also served as a Patrol Supervisor and Fire Investigator as part of the Arson Unit.

Dan will always be remembered for his loving spirit, his enthusiasm for life, and the joyful moments he created with those around him. He leaves behind a legacy of love and passion that will forever resonate in the hearts of his family and friends.

In addition to his parents, he is survived by his son, Cole Smith (9) of Middletown; brother, Bob (Kristine) Smith of Bourne, MA; sister, Jacquelyn (Keith) Smith of Whitinsville, MA; four nieces, Makayla, Katie, Holly, and Hannah; significant other, Taylor Helm; and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.

Visitation will be held on Friday, January 16th, from 3 to 6 p.m. at Biega Funeral Home, 3 Silver St., Middletown. with a brief prayer service held at 6 p.m. In lieu of flowers, a trust fund has been set up for Cole's future.
