It is with deep sorrow that we announce the sudden passing of Charles "Charlie" J. Halpin, 92, a beloved husband of Helen (Wegrzynski) Halpin who departed this world peacefully on June 17, 2024, leaving behind a legacy of love, dedication, and service.

Charlie was born in Brooklyn, NY, son of the late Charles and Elizabeth "Lillian/Lilly" (Spring) Halpin, whose values and love shaped him into the remarkable man he became.

He attended Catholic grammar schools in Brooklyn and Queens, starting at St. Barbara's and finishing at the top of his class at St. Barbara's, though spent many years at St. Elizabeth's.  He graduated on a full scholarship from Bishop Loughlin Memorial High School and with a mechanical engineering degree from Pratt Institute. After accepting a job at The Martin Company in Baltimore, he served in the U.S. Army as the Assistant Engineer at the Tokyo Ordnance Depot.  After being honorably discharged, he worked for Martin Marietta in Baltimore while attending law school at the University of Maryland School of Law, graduating in 1960.  That same year he was accepted to practice law before the Court of Appeals of Maryland.  After working a few years at Thoikol in Pennsylvania, he took a job as Sr. Contract Administrator at Raymond Engineering (Kaman) in Middletown, CT, retiring in 1997.  He always had a strong work ethic and created his first job as a three-year old pulling groceries in his wagon up and down Knickerbocker Avenue in the Bushwick neighborhood of Brooklyn.

For forty years, Charlie served as a lector at Saint Francis of Assisi Church, sharing his knowledge and faith with countless parishioners. His commitment to his faith and his church community was unwavering and deeply impactful.

He was a lifelong contract bridge player.  In 2003, he became a Gold Life Master and for 2003-2004 he served as the President of the Connecticut Bridge Association.  He played in many local games, at national tournaments, and also organized games and tournaments throughout the years.

After retirement, he became an avid reader and was a common face at the local libraries getting the latest novels to read.  He was also an avid bowler for many years, something he learned to love from both his parents.

Charlie was the devoted husband of Helen Halpin for over sixty-four years. Together, they shared a life filled with love and cherished memories. Charlie was the proud father of four children: his daughter Valerie Rancourt and her husband Keith, and his sons Michael Halpin, John Halpin, and Stephen Halpin. He is also survived by his brothers: Robert (Barbara) Halpin and Eleanor and Michael Murphy; his sisters: Eileen (Paul) Maniscalco, Lillian and John Franetovich, and Lorraine and Norman Kuerner. Charlie was a doting grandfather to Jeremy Halpin, Jolene and Kenneth Dickinson, Britney Bruno, Tanner Halpin, Yasmin Rancourt, Emilia Rancourt, and Noelle Halpin. His joy further multiplied with the arrival of his great-grandchildren Taylor Dickinson, Liberty Dickinson, Alexandra Bruno, and McKenzie Bruno.  He is also survived by his sisters-in-law Julie Halpin, Marcia Wegrzynski, Patricia Foley, and Louise West.  He is survived by a multitude of nieces, nephews, and cousins.

In addition to his parents, Charlie was predeceased by a sister, Margaret (Raymond) Dunnam.

A Funeral Liturgy to honor and celebrate Charlie's life will be held on Monday, June 24, 2024, at 10:30 a.m. at Saint Francis of Assisi Roman Catholic Church, 3 Elm Street, Middletown with Father Kennedy celebrating Mass.
