Obituary

Bernice (Towner) Berchulski, of Higganum, passed away on November 6th, 2024, at the age of 99. She was the widow of the late John Berchulski, and daughter of Orrison Towner and Pauline (Gregory)Blodgett, all of Higganum.

She was predeceased by her daughter, Amy Avery, and her sister, Alice Romanowski. She is survived by her son, Thomas, and her daughter, Paula (Ron) Annino, both of Higganum. Also, her 6 grandchildren, Greg (Katelyn) & Christopher Annino and Allison (Christopher Joseph) Stiglin, John Berchulski and Katherine Harris (Andrew), and Erin Avery of Ashford, as well as 4 great-grandchildren, Joey & Hailey Annino, Isobel Stiglin, and Sam Harris.

She attended DRHS, class of '43, where she was a D.A.R. recipient. After graduating, she attended UCONN to study journalism.  She was the Haddam town reporter for the Middletown Press while raising her family, a past member of both the Haddam Garden Club and Homemakers Club and later worked retail in Middletown at several businesses along Main St, including Mam'Selle, Kabel's, and Mallove's. Following her retirement, she had more time to pursue her love of gardening and sewing.  Her multiple gardens throughout her property were the envy of the neighborhood.

At her request, there will be no calling hours, and the burial will be private and at the convenience of the family.

Bernice's family would like to express their thanks and gratitude to the entire staff of the 3rd floor at Water's Edge in Middletown for providing her with such wonderful, thoughtful care during the last several months.
