Belky Yaquelín de los Angeles Santos Blanco, 60, of Middletown by way of Dominican Republic, and beloved wife of Angel Santos, passed away on Sunday September 3, 2023 at her home. She was born in Mao, Valverde, República Dominicana as daughter of the late Jesús and María Magdalena (Checo) Blanco. She was married on February 17, 1989, then moved to the United States on July 28, 1989 to Middletown, CT.
Belky grew up in a large, lively and loving family in Mao, Valverde, DR. She was an active member of the community, and loved modeling, playing ping pong and working at the library.
After moving to the United States, she became a mother to her first daughter, Stephany, in 1990. They learned to love Middletown together as they explored Russell Library, the community centers, and the local parks and museums often. The family became strong and dedicated members of St. Francis of Assisi Church. In 1995 she had her second daughter, Patricia and the family moved to their new home in the south side of Middletown where they still live today.
Her daughters both attended Bielefield Elementary School, and when Patricia went to kindergarten, she decided to work at Bielefield as well. There she enjoyed caring for and playing with the children as a lunch and recess aid. She was a light in the community and her laughter filled the halls and the playground. Many children loved running up to Mrs. Santos, or "Mom" for a hug and a high five.
In Middletown Athletics, Belky was a strong and consistent figure in the stands and on the sidelines. She not only cheered for Patricia and Stephany at every game, but loved cheering for their beloved teammates as well. She attended every Prof. Gallitto Basketball game, and Middletown city and school basketball, soccer, softball and tennis match that her daughters played in from 1995 - 2013. She often brought grapes or oranges for the team to share, and her voice carried across the field in encouragement and support. Her limited absences were clear and missed by the team because her energy was so magnetic and noticeable. Many are grateful for her being a mother figure to all.
After her time working at Bielefield, she began volunteering her time, and then working at St. Francis of Assisi Church. She taught Sunday school and religious classes for various ages, but she had a soft spot for young children. She loved reading to them and teaching them how to love each other and be kind. She loved sharing God's lessons, and encouraging patience and hope. She also worked as administrative staff for the church, and helped write church bulletins in English and Spanish, and planned and participated in many events at the church hall. She was an active parishioner and often volunteered at the soup kitchens, and loved visiting the nursing homes. She was a patient and listening ear for many elders in the community, and loved listening to their stories and saying prayers with them.
Belky was a lover and leader. She was a wonderful godmother and aunt to many beautiful children, and she had so much love to give. She used to always say, "Do your best, don't settle for less" to encourage a valiant effort no matter the circumstances. She loved saying that "Patience is the mother of all virtues," as her patience was unparalleled.
Many in the community and her family called her the closest person to a saint that they had ever met. Light exuded from her, and she loved to shine for herself and others. She loved to sing in the shower and at church, and teaching others how to dance merengue. She loved to give and receive joy, and enjoy all of life's moments. She believed in the power of family, and although her family was all over the world, on early mornings she would make her phone calls to check on people. Her daughters remember her loud and personalized greetings like " 'Ción Mamá queriiiida," to her mother, "Americaaaaana," to her sister, Dolores, "Ah Haa, y entonces", to her sister, Nena, or "Yo aquí, quien allá," to her sister Daleska. She had a personal exchange for everyone, and no matter how tired she was, her energy was high and she was happy to see or hear you.
Belky loved animals, like her dogs King and Baron, and Tingo and Max. She was a strong supporter of dreams and ideas, like proudly displaying photos and her daughters diplomas on the wall, or wearing a McLeod 9 Truck Line winter hat no matter the weather. She was proud to represent herself, her family, and her loved ones at any moment.
Belky loved sharing in community over food, especially a good Dominican Sancocho, Italian Eggplant Parmesan, or her favorite dessert, flan. She unfortunately suffered from diabetes for many years, though she hid her pain and struggles from others. The diabetes spread and caused heart and kidney failure, but in the end, it was her heart that had given so much love to others, that stopped. She passed peacefully in her home after a beautiful dinner celebrating her 60th birthday (by Dominican birthday). She was cheering and so excited to turn 60, and reminisced on the past decade and how so much has changed.
She asks the world to be patient and kind, to love without limits. Be grateful for each other and for every moment. Love loud, and love hard. "Y Dios te Bendiga"
Belky is survived by her husband, Angel; daughters, Stephany, Patricia; siblings, Daleska, Nena, Bethania, Dolores, Papito, Raulin; and many more family members who loved her dearly. They carry her memory and spirit with them.
Her Funeral Liturgy will be held on Saturday Sept. 9th at 1:00 p.m. at St. Francis of Assisi Church, 10 Elm Street, Middletown. Family and friends may gather prior to the service on Saturday from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at Biega Funeral Home, 3 Silver St. Middletown.
