Alan “Red" R. Schumann, Sr., 92, formerly of Old Saybrook and Middletown, husband of the late Lenore (Wrang) Schumann, died Tuesday, September 1, 2026, at Middlesex Hospital.

He was born in Hartford, the son of the late Robert H. and Leta (Bigoness) Schumann. Before his retirement, Alan was an engineer with Southern New England Telephone for forty years.

He is survived by his son, Alan R. Schumann, Jr., and his wife, Marisa of Cromwell; daughter, Erica Cosenza and her husband, Frank of Old Saybrook; grandchildren, Matthew Schumann and his wife, Rebekah of Cromwell, Kathryn Schumann of New York City, NY, Nicholas Cosenza and his wife, Michelle of Kodiak, AK, A.J. Cosenza and his wife, Emily of Boston, MA; great-grandchild, Arthur F. Cosenza, also multiple nieces, nephews, and godchildren. He was predeceased by his daughter, Carol E. Schumann; brothers, Leonard M., and Roy W. Schumann; and sister, Arlene Schumann.

In his younger days, Alan played high school soccer for Wethersfield High School and later with several local soccer clubs in the Wethersfield – Hartford area. After his playing days ended, he continued his passion for soccer by refereeing and getting involved with the Connecticut Junior Soccer Association. Although he was an avid reader, when he watched television, it was usually a soccer match, and it did not matter where it was or who was playing.

Alan and Lenore maintained lifelong friendships with individuals and couples from their high school and college days. They participated in a dinner club for over fifty years. Alan and Lenore also loved traveling and enjoyed experiencing the food and culture wherever their adventures took them. Alan possessed an engineer’s mind and was always curious how things worked. He was an elaborate planner and record keeper.

Grandpa was always interested in his grandchildren's activities and happenings. As his health deteriorated, he particularly enjoyed pictures and videos of his grandchildren and great-grandchild, Arthur. His greatest joy in life was his family.

There will be no calling hours. A Mass of Christian burial will be held on Saturday, October 3, 2026, at 12 p.m. at St. John Church in Cromwell. Those who wish may send memorial contributions to Middlesex Hospital or the charity of the donor’s choice.
