Alan “Al” Herzog, 76, of Durham, husband of Mildred (Lessig) Herzog, died Wednesday July 8, 2026 at Water’s Edge Health and Rehabilitation.

He was born in Manchester, the son of the late George and Eleanor (Munson) Herzog. Al served with the Air Force National Guard during the Vietnam War. Prior to his retirement, he was a warehouse manager for In Store Opportunity in Middletown.

In addition to his wife of 55 years, he is survived by his son, Christopher Herzog and his wife, Janice of Middletown; two brothers, William Herzog (Cindy) of Ellington and John Herzog (Linda) of Rockville; two grandsons, Justin and Brett who he would brag about to whomever would listen and loved unconditionally; also several nieces and nephews.

Al’s love of baseball brought him, with his son, to Little League. Starting as a T-Ball coach for his son, up to the role of President, he remained committed to making the league better. He was instrumental in combining the Durham and Middlefield leagues to form Coginchaug Little League. Al made many lasting friendships through Little League and was most proud of having the boys minor league field named in his honor.

All those who knew Al and his love for wearing shorts all year round, in his honor feel free to wear shorts to his service.

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday (July 15th) at 11 a.m. at Biega Funeral Home, 3 Silver St., Middletown. Burial will be in Mica Hill Cemetery, Durham. Friends may call at Biega Funeral Home on Wednesday from 9:30 to 11 a.m. prior to the service.
