Alice Clark Saunders, 59, died on January 5, 2013 at Middlesex Hospital. She was a long-time resident of Middletown, CT since graduating from Wesleyan University in 1975. Born in Albany, NY of Ruth and John Clark, both deceased, she grew up in Delmar, NY and graduated from Bethlehem Central High School. Alice worked 27 ½ years for the US Postal Service in Middletown, was a member of the National Association of Letter Carriers and was a scribe of Middletown Station Notes for the Union Carrier. During this time she played softball for ten years and was a dance aerobic instructor for the YMCA for four years. After receiving a Masters of Library Science at Southern Connecticut State University in 1994, she was a part-time reference librarian for 22 years at the Russell Library in Middletown. An avid reader in her free time she loved gardening and working around her house. Alice is survived by Austin Saunders, her husband of 25 years, two sisters: Susan Clark Blackburn of Millersville, MD and Mary Clark Zibelli of Boca Raton, FL, nieces Jennifer Blackburn Chasse and Allison Zibelli, MD, nephews Ronald Zibelli, Jr. and David Zibelli, several great nieces, nephews and cousins, a large Saunders family including sisters-in-law Jackie Robinson of Bowling Green, VA and Mary Neal of Roanoke, VA, brothers-in-law Wendell Saunders of Kingsland, GA and Percy Saunders, Jr. of Marysville, CA, and stepdaughter Renee Young and her son Mckyee of MD. Special friends include Terry, Joe and Brianne Bienkowski, Al Vernalez, Doug Welk, Cathy Ahern and Sue Gruss. Alice thanks everyone, family and friends, for all their love and support during her five year battle with cancer. Donations in her name can be made to the Russell Library, 123 Broad St., Middletown, CT 06457. A celebration of her life will be held on Sunday, January 20, 2013, 2 pm at Biega Funeral Home, 3 Silver St., Middletown.
