Irene (Woloszczuk) Mekrut, 94, of Haddam, wife of the late Frank Mekrut, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by her family, on Wednesday, January 2, 2013.
She was born in Hartford, daughter of the late Alfred and Caroline (Paszek) Woloszczuk. Prior to her retirement, she was the co-founder of Town and Country Nurseries in Haddam. Irene loved spending time with her family and friends in Haddam, Florida and Old Saybrook. She volunteered for many years at the Haddam Senior Meal Site and found great pleasure with the many friends she made there.
Irene was a loving wife, mother, daughter, sister, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend who brought joy to all those around her. She had a smile that was unmatched and was always able to light up a room.
Irene is survived by her sons, Frank Mekrut, Jr. of California, William and his wife Joan of Rhode Island, Philip and his wife Susan of California; her daughters, Carolyn Glazier and her husband Robert of Killingworth, Andrea Mekrut of Old Saybrook; her sister Lydia Ritchie of Glastonbury; eight grandchildren; three great grandchildren and two sister-in-laws, Barbara Woloszczuk of Glastonbury and Dolores Mekrut of Orono, ME.
Funeral services will be held on Monday at 10 a.m. from Biega Funeral Home, 3 Silver St. Middletown, followed by a Funeral Liturgy at 11 a.m. at St. Peter Church, Higganum. Burial will be in Burr District Cemetery. Friends may call on Sunday from 4 to 6 p.m. at Biega Funeral Home.
